I’ve had a surprising number of conversations recently with people who are planning to move from one stage to the next – personally or in their business.
What usually comes with this is a sense that “I’ve never done this before.” So big disorientation and unsettledness.
Everything seems upside down.
Read the rest of this entry »Recently we had some devastating fires whip through some small towns between Boulder and Denver, Colorado. Nothing could be done with the high winds we had that day, and a thousand families lost everything they own.
And yet, we are grateful for the limited loss of life. And millions of dollars were contributed by the community within a couple of days to help these folks get through the toughest times of their lives.
What do we learn for our businesses?
Read the rest of this entry »For most of us, 2020 was a brutal year. I’m hopeful that 2021 will be better, but it’s going to be a slow improvement, likely with many false starts and surprises.
So how do we remain optimistic in an environment like this? It’s about the learning.

Challenges, problems and failures provide a richer learning environment than when things go well. I find that a bit annoying, but it’s true. It’s about being observant and thoughtful despite the emotional turmoil of things not going according to plan.

Actually, she was explaining why she now uses the word resilient rather than sustainable.
Her point is that sustainable implies a sense of being static, of an ideal world where everything is balanced and unchanging. Unfortunately, that world doesn’t exist.
THINGS DON’T GO SMOOTHLY all the time.
Yes, you’re on a powerful mission. But danger happens:
- Regulations change
- New competitors arise
- A key employee leaves
So how do you navigate when things turn dark and threatening?
