You know you should.

But there’s so much to do! So much to pay attention to!

Disconnecting is good for the soul. Do you have a time every day where you give yourself permission to disconnect from your business?

When we think about opportunities we encounter, it’s often with the perspective that the universe is being generous to us.

It’s not necessarily something we can create ourselves – it’s from the outside in.

But I’ve found that I have MUCH more influence on the opportunities which come to me than I ever thought possible. It starts with a surprising perspective which sounds like a contradiction:

It’s real easy for me to get immersed in the details of the day. It makes me feel good to be busy and “productive.”

But I need to spend time getting back to the basics, the big picture. Why? Because it gives perspective to focus on the most important things.

A recent example was an offer I had to do some work for a group who approached me. I love what they do, but it’s also more work for me and I’m cautious about taking on obligations right now.

I tend to avoid conflict. There, I said it.

But problems and disagreements do arise. We can blast social media with our opinions and viewpoints, all perfectly valid of course.

The problem is when it gets personal: I’m trying to move forward, and someone is blocking my path or otherwise giving me anxiety.

I’ve been recently dealing with a death in the family, which instantly changed my perspective on what’s really critical in life.

I understand being very focused on business issues, customers, employees, and profitability. Yes, those are important.

At the same time, we all realize that there are other things which push those to the background. If you’re sick, you’ll focus on that so you can get back to business and give it the time and energy it deserves.

Many of my readers are really struggling right now. Loss of work, lack of direction, confusion.

I had a chance to coach someone recently who was sensing this quite profoundly. Confined to his house, without work prospects, he’s finding it hard to move forward in any useful direction.

But here’s the thing: he’s actually been given a gift.

THORNS ARE A REAL PAIN to deal with. In your business, perhaps your “thorns” are:

  • Customers that are demanding, unappreciative, and don’t pay on time
  • Employees who don’t get along well
  • Regulations
  • Mistakes
  • Life

This is what makes leadership so difficult. When things are going well, great! But there always seems to be a few aspects which are painful.

ONE OF THE UNIVERSAL KEYS to getting stuff done is to focus.  Avoid distractions, concentrate on one thing, and you’ll actually move ahead faster.

I get that.  Especially in our highly distracted culture, you can spend your entire day just flitting from one shiny object to the next.

But there’s more to the story.

THINGS DON’T GO SMOOTHLY all the time.

Yes, you’re on a powerful mission.  But danger happens:

  • Regulations change
  • New competitors arise
  • A key employee leaves

So how do you navigate when things turn dark and threatening?

CHRISTUS RESURREXIT!  Christ is risen!

We need new life in everything: our careers, our health, our families, our businesses.

So it’s good to recognize that this is healthy, necessary, even essential.  But for new life to spring forth, the old has to die off.

Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. — John 12:24

So let’s take this day to recognize what new life God has given us.  A new chance.  A new way of looking at things.

And our own role in the world.

I wish you all a wonderful and sacred Easter season, today and over the coming weeks!
