ROSANN WINN is a small business owner. And a performer. And a teacher. And a mother and wife.
It’s hard to know which of those to put first.
I’ve known Rosann for a number of years – we first connected when she sang for our yearly church picnic. I was impressed not only with her artistic ability, but also her generous nature and gracious support.
But that’s a tiny part of the picture.
KENT GARVIN STARTED his company in 1995 with a conviction to build a different kind of business.
What he’s grown is amazing in more ways than you’d expect.
At the moment it’s actually three businesses:
- Colorado Iron & Metal scrap metal recycling
- Colorado Metal Manufacturing fabrication and machining
- Green Hop’r equipment sales
J ANE NORTHRUP IS MY INSPIRATION. Because she’s living an amazing story with clarity and conviction.
Jane started Authority Staffing last year, as a way to bring ex-convicts to full employment. But that’s a tiny fraction of the story.
You see, she’s doing this because her deep Christian faith has given her concrete direction. Even including the name of the company itself and the fact that it’s for-profit.
USUALLY I PROFILE FOR-PROFIT COMPANIES but I was so fascinated by this story that I just had to share.
I was introduced to Lucy Wallace by Stephanie Heacox, who I talked about last week. Lucy heads up Alchemy of Movement, where she delivers extremely energetic dance classes in Boulder.
But Lucy discovered an opportunity to bring dance into women’s prisons. At first she thought this might just be an occasional class, but over the last year it’s become amazing.
STEPHANIE HEACOX is launching a great new business, Senior Homeshares. It’s built on a powerful personal motivation to address pain and reduce anxiety.
You see, a few years ago, her mother was in the usual end-of-life bind about housing. She couldn’t sustain the family home, but didn’t want to move into Assisted Living or one of the other services for people who need support.
The financial burden was part of it, of course, but also the difficulty of making decisions to become dependent on others.
RICARDO SEMLER created a company named SEMCO back in 1980, and has continued his amazing work since then.
Check out the video below, where you’ll hear about what SEMCO did to redesign its company with an absolute minimum of rules and obstacles.
No stable job roles.
No defined work hours, days, locations.
Freely open information sharing.
It’s stunning, because it breaks every convention we have about what a business is supposed to look like. Read the rest of this entry »
MASSAGE THERAPY is an interesting field. Despite having been around for many decades (and in the East, centuries), it’s still breaking into peoples’ awareness.
Yet it’s such a powerful addition to creating a healthy life.
I’ve been talking with Becky Garcia, who heads up Garden of Healing Massage Therapy here in Windsor. And I’ve had a chance to peek behind the scenes of the creation of her heart-centered service.
HAPPY LUCKY’S TEAHOUSE is a little shop in downtown Fort Collins. They have the largest tea selection in Colorado, as displayed on their ever-growing “Great Wall of Tea” alongside teapots, accessories, and silk scarves.
Silk scarves? What’s that about?
It turns out that those scarves were an important part of the genesis of this business. Read the rest of this entry »
MEDICAL CARE is going through traumatic changes in this country. You might not be aware, but primary care family physicians are disappearing rapidly – either by being gobbled up into large care groups, or going out of business.
The net effect of this is that quality of primary care is going down and options are disappearing.
