Several things happened to me recently which reminded me that … the beauty in life comes from what also makes it messy.
I tend to be an organized guy, so it doesn’t feel comfortable when I’m dealing with things outside my control. I like to have a plan.
But I was part of an event organizing team recently, and the event was truly amazing. Yet it wasn’t as structured and tightly controlled as I would normally prefer. So why did it work so well?

- Customers that are demanding, unappreciative, and don’t pay on time
- Employees who don’t get along well
- Regulations
- Mistakes
- Life
This is what makes leadership so difficult. When things are going well, great! But there always seems to be a few aspects which are painful.
WE FOCUS AN AWFUL LOT on product features. We’re faster, more powerful, more fully featured than the competition.
Honestly, a lot of customers are getting burned out on that.
They’re recognizing that “good enough” is plenty sufficient for most things in life. There are a few things that each person deeply cares about, but other things … it’s OK to not have the best.
HAVING GROWN UP AROUND THE MOUNTAINS, I find this picture beautifully striking. Especially as it highlights that we NEVER get to see the stars this clearly anymore; they’re obscured by the light from our cities.
Being a business owner or leader has the same problem. We’re distracted from seeing the purity and beauty of the powerful WHY behind our business.
