careDO YOU WANT PRODUCTIVITY?

Here’s the simple truth of the matter.  You can’t beat people into being productive, at least not for long.

People put their passion and energy into what they care about, not what their boss cares about.

Sounds hopeless?  Well, there’s a solution.

So check out the executive doctoral program in values-driven leadership and apply by November 1 2016.

buckstopsherefrontsmallYOUR PURPOSE AND VALUES drive everything you do.  Fantastic!

But what drives it over time?  What keeps you from getting distracted by the pressures of the day and communication difficulties?

What often happens is that only one person is truly accountable to the vision: The founder.  But is that person involved in every decision and discussion?  Not if you’ve grown to any size.

PuzzleJUST TODAY I was speaking with a business leader who has some pieces of their purpose and mission, but not the whole thing.

This is more common than you’d think.

Here’s what it might look like.  You started your business five years ago, with some thoughts about where it might go: Read the rest of this entry »

TOMORROW IS OUR Independence Day celebration in the USA.  Many people will be taking the day off, and planning a summer holiday for the family.

Here’s the thing about our government:  We always have plenty to complain and worry about.  When they do stuff, we resist change.  When they don’t do stuff, we complain that they’re gridlocked.

But let’s take a moment to realize what an asset our government is to our success in business Read the rest of this entry »

Moon shotTHE US SPACE PROGRAM was actually conceived in 1960 under Eisenhower, but John F Kennedy really launched it in a speech on May 25, 1961:

“… I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth. Having grown up during this time, the Space Race became a powerful foundation for how I viewed the world.

Because it’s about taking care.  Of the house, of possessions, of the gifts you’ve been given in your life.

This is something each of us needs to do.

cvdl doctorate videoTHIS WEEK I DISCOVERED an exciting new program offered by Benedictine University near Chicago: their Doctoral Program in Values Driven Leadership for Senior Executives.

This is an amazing development.

This is a mature, well-thought-through program for those who are truly serious about leading businesses with deeper values – the same values I talk about here on this blog.

RunningOUR MODEL OF BALANCE tends to be quite static.

Stable.  Unchanging.

Unachievable in real life.

Because, in real life, you’re constantly running.  Things are changing every minute, every day, every year.

The very instant you think you’ve achieved stability, it gets destroyed by the things you’re doing and what’s happening in the world.

piranha-303345_1280WHAT YOU’RE DOING IS WEIRD.

OK, so you’re in an ordinary industry.  Delivering a product that’s great but not exactly … weird.

What I mean is that your values-based business is highly unusual and you’re getting all kinds of “advice” that you should be more ordinary.  Color inside the lines.  Even become a non-profit, if you’re trying to make the world a better place.
