fearWE SPENT THE LAST SIX MONTHS focusing on, and often dreading, the outcome of the US presidential election.

There really was no reason to be paralyzed, but it seems that’s where a lot of business owners went to.

So it’s time reflect.  In business, stuff constantly changes.  New competitors come on the scene.  Technology advances.  Regulations shift.

FARNSWORTH GROUP is a very special kind of company.

A few months ago, they were recognized as a Great Place To Work, an award that isn’t at all easy to obtain.  But in a very real way, it’s something they’ve been working on for their entire history, over 110 years.

Many people equate a great place to work with the high-tech snazziness of foosball tables and idealistic millennials.  But here we have an engineering and architectural company with an honored history spanning multiple generations.  Their focused innovation is inspiring.

careDO YOU WANT PRODUCTIVITY?

Here’s the simple truth of the matter.  You can’t beat people into being productive, at least not for long.

PuzzleJUST TODAY I was speaking with a business leader who has some pieces of their purpose and mission, but not the whole thing.

This is more common than you’d think.

Here’s what it might look like.  You started your business five years ago, with some thoughts about where it might go: Read the rest of this entry »

TOMORROW IS OUR Independence Day celebration in the USA.  Many people will be taking the day off, and planning a summer holiday for the family.

Here’s the thing about our government:  We always have plenty to complain and worry about.  When they do stuff, we resist change.  When they don’t do stuff, we complain that they’re gridlocked.

But let’s take a moment to realize what an asset our government is to our success in business Read the rest of this entry »

Moon shotTHE US SPACE PROGRAM was actually conceived in 1960 under Eisenhower, but John F Kennedy really launched it in a speech on May 25, 1961:

“… I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish.”

Having grown up during this time, the Space Race became a powerful foundation for how I viewed the world.

StewardshipTHE WORD “STEWARDSHIP” CROPPED UP in several conversations for me recently, so it seems that God’s asking me to pay attention to the idea.

The word originally came from “servant of the house,” but over time expanded to the role of chief servant.  Well, these days few of us have servants, much less more than one, so why is the concept important?

Because it’s about taking care.  Of the house, of possessions, of the gifts you’ve been given in your life.

This is something each of us needs to do.
