There are times when progress is just … S O   S L O W. It seems like I’m getting nowhere and wasting time.

Most of the time, that’s all in my head. The pressure is coming from wanting something Right Now.

But most things take some time to develop.

Curiosity is one of the main tools for being a coach. At least for me.

When I have nothing to learn, I’m really acting in the role of an advisor or consultant. As soon as I understand the client’s situation, I can have an opinion about how to move forward.

That’s not a good thing, because what I’m really saying is how I would move forward if I was in that situation. Which may be absolutely the wrong thing for my client!

There have been a whole lot of distractions lately! I’ve had a tough time getting back to what’s important in the new year.

And this picture is so incredibly appropriate to me and the topic! I couldn’t resist. OK, Carl, get back on track.

I have a “short list” of weekly topics sitting in front of me, and that really helps. It has a handful of tasks that I need to pay attention to. And I found it important that this is on an actual sheet of paper on my desk, not hidden in a window that I’ll probably cover up.

OFTEN, PEOPLE BECOME PARALYZED by the tasks ahead.

If you think about it, though, the list of problems to be solved and tasks to be performed is ALWAYS infinite.  Infinite in the sense that it extends beyond our ability to keep them all in mind.

So it’s not a problem that’s unique to you.

But how do you stay away from getting depressed and paralyzed?

PROGRESS COMES FROM BEING CLEAR. But of course it’s real easy to say that, right?

The problem is that it’s real easy to let the urgent overtake the important.  Constantly.

Here’s a simple example.  It seems like in between my meetings today, that I’ve been beating my email inbox back.  Right now it has 29 messages in it, but every time a new one comes in I have to pay attention.

Just in case it’s something urgent.
