I grew up in Colorado, which means I really enjoy the variety of seasons that we have. We’re now moving from the heat of summer into a more subdued, introverted time. I look forward to seeing snow-capped peaks again.

It turns out that everything goes through seasons: jobs, projects, relationships, even lifetimes. And even though we often strive for stability, changes are good too.

I’m thinking about each of my clients, who are each going through their own version of change. Many times it’s not at all clear what the next step is going to look like. That’s when our conversation can be extremely valuable.

We learn very early in life to conform, to fit in, to copy.

Unfortunately this doesn’t usually lead to success in business. And it doesn’t make you a leader.

Instead, you have to figure out how you’re going to be different, to stick out and be memorable. But this takes courage.

THERE’S A LOT OF FAKENESS in the world.

I would imagine that it’s always been this way, I suppose, but now it’s so much more obvious when people aren’t showing their company authentically in the world.

And consumers are getting really quite sophisticated in detecting fake messages.

uncertainIN THE 1960s, Paul Simon wrote a song entitled Fakin’ It. Here’s the second verse:

 

I’m such a dubious soul,
And a walk in the garden
Wears me down.
Tangled in the fallen vines,
Pickin’ up the punch lines,
I’ve just been fakin’ it,
Not really makin’ it.

This really speaks to the imposter syndrome which strikes a great many business leaders.

The truth is that we all feel weak and unsettled inside.  We all feel like we’re fakin’ it.

I hope you’ve had a chance to see some of Brené’s amazing TED Talks in the area of vulnerability.  They’re insightful and powerful.

I’ve been making the connection between this topic and the clients I’m working with.  Because starting and leading a mission-driven business takes courage.
