What’s in it for me?
That’s a phrase which is particularly popular in sales, to help marketing and sales people to focus on the customer rather than themselves. WIIFM.
But do you want to be a self-focused person and leader?

Milton Friedman declared that the primary purpose of a business is to make money. Over the course of the last century, we’ve kidded ourselves into thinking that this is the ONLY purpose of business.
But it’s not true.
The money is just a holding place for adding value to the world. Sure, you can transfer money to someone else and it makes them happy – but it hasn’t actually made the world a better place until someone uses it to DO something.

Don’t get me wrong – we all need to have some relaxation and downtime.
But we know that most of these reasons are bogus excuses.
ONE OF THE UNIVERSAL KEYS to getting stuff done is to focus. Avoid distractions, concentrate on one thing, and you’ll actually move ahead faster.
I get that. Especially in our highly distracted culture, you can spend your entire day just flitting from one shiny object to the next.
But there’s more to the story.
ROSANN WINN is a small business owner. And a performer. And a teacher. And a mother and wife.
It’s hard to know which of those to put first.
I’ve known Rosann for a number of years – we first connected when she sang for our yearly church picnic. I was impressed not only with her artistic ability, but also her generous nature and gracious support.
But that’s a tiny part of the picture.
MASSAGE THERAPY is an interesting field. Despite having been around for many decades (and in the East, centuries), it’s still breaking into peoples’ awareness.
Yet it’s such a powerful addition to creating a healthy life.
I’ve been talking with Becky Garcia, who heads up Garden of Healing Massage Therapy here in Windsor. And I’ve had a chance to peek behind the scenes of the creation of her heart-centered service.
OUR MODEL OF BALANCE tends to be quite static.
Stable. Unchanging.

Because, in real life, you’re constantly running. Things are changing every minute, every day, every year.
The very instant you think you’ve achieved stability, it gets destroyed by the things you’re doing and what’s happening in the world.
YOU WANT TO BE AWESOME at everything. I get that.
The problem is that the real world gets in the way!
Here’s an example: You want to attract awesome, talented employees. But your business plan also says you’re very tight on expenses.
Which means you probably can’t pay people what they’re worth. Perhaps you’ll save money on hiring less-than-top-notch people, then spend a bundle training them up.
DOUG, WYNNE and CORKIE ODELL started their brewery in 1989 in the outer reaches of Fort Collins. The Odell Brewing Company is now one of the top craft breweries in the area, distributing to ten states in the region.
There’s a distinct passion for producing high quality beers. But that’s just the beginning of the story.
I had the opportunity to speak with Karla Baise recently, the company’s community outreach coordinator. This isn’t just a simple PR position, it’s actually a critical part of the company’s business strategy.
Here’s a great example: When I met with Karla, she had a couple of ladies stop in with big bags of fresh herbs from The Gardens At Spring Creek. Read the rest of this entry »
