You are not the results you produce.

That’s something we tend to forget, as we work so hard to accomplish things and make a difference. Which is all well and good, but it’s not the same as who you are as a wonderful human on this earth.

Think of it: You don’t change that quickly. You change slowly over the course of a lifetime, with spurts here and there, but generally it’s slow and steady.

But the world tries to tell us this result is good, while that result is … not so good. But it’s based on things which stand out as special and unusual, not the normal day-to-day which is actually 95% of what we do.

That’s how stuff makes the news too. Nothing ordinary ever gets reported.

If you’re a boss, part of your challenge is to convey a better balance for your employees. If they perceive that 5% was really great and 95% gets ignored, then the 95% day-to-day effort will be reduced.

But you want folks who do their day-to-day job well, right? You think of them as solid and reliable.

So take the opportunity every week to give your folks some great feedback about their progress on the normal job stuff. You don’t have to go overboard, but don’t ignore it.

We all need a bit of balanced perspective.
