I was talking with a friend the other day who mentioned her deep concern about what the future looks like.

For whatever reason, humans are wired to pay extra attention when someone communicates worry. No doubt it’s similar to animals communicating danger to others in their group.

I was noticing the effect her concerns had on my own mental state. I empathized with her worries. I sympathized with the impact it was having on her. But then I internalized it and started being worried myself.

We’d like to think that the relationship between manager and employee is very transactional. The employee does the required work, and the manager pays them. Then everybody goes home and has their Real Life.

But we’re all human. We have ups and downs, triumphs and challenges.

In the work setting, we like to ignore all that. It’s just about “doing the work”. If we were all automatons, that might make it even easier. But there’s so much more.

Yeah, I’ll confess: I’m an engineer.

So it’s fascinating to me that I’m much deeper now into the “people side” of business. I love that people are SO much more challenging to work with!

A never ending cascade of depth and complication. But my engineering side does come out, because I tend to see everything as a process which can be designed and improved.

If only people were that simple.

It’s taken me many years to develop my ability to empathize with other people. I tend to think of myself as analytical and goal driven, and relating to people isn’t my natural strength.

Taking my first management job, and later increasing my scope, caused me to realize that results are achieved only through the team I lead. After my corporate job I focused on coaching, helping my clients to develop deeper skills of leadership, influence, and driving results.

I’ve learned that the core skill of leading people is simply empathy. It seems a bit weird because it’s not me driving someone else, the way we usually think about leadership.

I needed the support of so many people to get through 2019! After being pronounced free of prostate cancer, I’ve had the chance to reflect on how important that was.

We don’t like to ask for help.

Especially in the business context, we want to present this image of professionalism. Having it all solved and sorted. Being in control.
