You might get frustrated because it seems your employees don’t care as much about the business as you do.

If you’re a founder, this is especially true. You’ve poured your heart and soul into this work for so many years!

But let’s take a moment to think through this. Why should they care as deeply about it as you do?

  • They don’t have as much control as you do
  • Or get as much reward if things go right
  • This is likely just a temporary assignment, then it’ll be something else

But more important, they don’t have your life! They have other things going on, a different family, different history, different concerns.

Why would we expect them to think the way you do?

So put your focus on finding the intersection between your goals and their priorities. When you find that, reinforce it with motivating work and adequate pay and benefits. Create a team culture which rewards people for achieving your goals and working together as a team.

But they have a different life than you do. That’s quite OK.
