We each live our life, and then the world moves on without us. Our time is short.

I don’t mean for this to be a depressing thought. It’s actually encouraging to think that we’re a part of the progression of humanity, contributing in the ways that we choose.

That doesn’t make your work unimportant, it just brings a perspective which transcends what you do from day to day.

Some people like to articulate this as a larger purpose, even life’s mission.

In a way, you’re working on that larger purpose every day and through everything you do. Whether you realize it or not.

That’s why it can be better to do it intentionally, rather than just randomly. If part of my mission is to lead an organization where people are inspired to contribute their best, then I’ll be just a little more thoughtful about every interaction and decision.

Most of us don’t have it that clearly defined, so it migrates over time. That’s OK I suppose, but I prefer to periodically come back to “check in” with my life and career. I’ve found it useful to do this during the summer when I can take time to reflect and ponder, and at the beginning of a new year when I’m looking forward to the upcoming goals and contributions.

And I need to be humble that I’m only making a small impact in the world. But it’s meaningful … to me and for those I care for.
