Being a leader can be lonely. You feel like you are being watched all the time and you have to act like you have it all together.

I get that.

But here’s the challenge: to ask for help when you need it. Which takes a little vulnerability.

There are options, though. You don’t have to declare to your people that “I have no idea what I’m doing” even though it might feel like that sometimes. First, you have the option to talk to people one-on-one. Inside your organization or somewhere else.

You might tell someone, “I have an idea I’d like to pass by you.” That’s not TOO vulnerable, right?

Or, “I’d appreciate your perspective.”

Even, “Could you answer a question for me?”

Each of these creates a consultative sort of conversation, but doesn’t diminish your role as the leader. As long as it doesn’t create more work for the other person.

If you’re feeling uncomfortable in creating these kinds of conversations with your employees, then try it out first with folks you respect but don’t work for you. But ultimately you should be able to be this open with your team.
