Inspiration

The verb “inspire” is drawn from the Latin to breathe into, often meaning to breathe life into something.

What are you doing to breathe life into your organization and team? Even if you don’t think it’s in your job description, it’s what moves people to follow a leader.

So it IS your job. The challenge is to figure out what works with you personally, for each person on your team, and within the culture of the larger organization.

I’ve discovered that I like organizing things. Which of course is useful, but can also drive others crazy who don’t think that way.

The last thing I want to do is to impose that mindset on other people. They might appreciate it when I do my organization thing, because that can take a load off their stress. But they also want to do THEIR thing, likely something I’m not so good at.

To help inspire others, I have to understand what gets their energies going. They might enjoy being artistic. Or having deep conversations with close colleagues. Or doing work and getting to milestones.

This is the hard part about being a leader: Not everyone thinks like you do. Or is motivates by what turns you on.
