At times it might feel like you’re married to your business, your organization, your job. If you are a leader at the top, you may have even started this whole venture.
But really, this is just a passing moment in history. Much happened before you were here, and much will happen after.
The same goes with each person on your team, with an even shorter timespan. Someone might be with you for a few weeks, a few months, a few years. But it’s not their entire life.
Now this may sound a bit nihilistic, but it’s actually great to lead you to a balanced perspective. The truth is that we each have our own lives which intersects with many thousands of others over the course of a lifetime.
What can we do with this observation? Well, it’s about making those interactions meaningful and valuable and memorable.
I’ve always striven for relationships which bring joy and growth to all involved. And yes, this includes the joy of doing a job well which delivers value to customers.
Note that “joy” is not always the same as “fun.” Working hard can be joyful, as can solving tough problems. Most of us might be reluctant to call that “fun.”
What are you doing to help each of your people understand and be inspired by the wonderful value they’re bringing?
