Last week I talked about giving in and bringing things to a close. But most of the time we don’t want to do that, right?
We want to be the cheerleader to bring everyone to that wonderful vision of the future. That’s such an important part of your role as leader, to help bring everyone together, align their actions, and help them commit to doing all the hard work.
The challenge may be that the team isn’t emotionally there yet.
So the first thing you do is to paint the picture of success. In terms which are motivating to each of THEM, which is likely different than how you think about it.
Then you help make the connection for each individual to that wonderful future. Maybe it’s working hard as a team. Or delivering something which brings customers joy. Or learning something.
Likely, all of these things together.
Then you keep folks on track by giving feedback and solving problems. And coaching your folks to fix the problems themselves.
Then sharing the success! Financially, of course, but also having fun and making career progress.
This is the role of leadership. So get good at it.
