Humans are social creatures; witness how important it is for us to maintain connections to family and friends during holidays and other celebrations.
This is true in the workplace as well.
I’m usually an introvert, which means I build my energy more by being alone than in a group. But even for me, some of the highlights of my career were when we accomplished something as a team. Together.
That’s one of the most powerful motivation and alignment tools that leaders have: to express the common purpose and goal of the team. We use it at the large level when answering such questions as “why does this company even exist?”
But we also use this for projects large and small, even down to the scale of a single day.
When people internalize the importance of achieving a common goal, they’ll often be more creative and productive. They’ll be motivated by the wonderful feeling of achievement, which multiplies when it’s a group.
Individual achievements are great, they’re necessary and important.
But group achievements are even better.
